Malaysia arrests 22 Shia Muslims in Selangor

KONFRONTASI - More than 20 Shia Muslims have been arrested by Malaysian authorities in a series of raids over the past few days, which have sparked fears of an upward trend of persecution.

Media reports on Wednesday quoted Kamil Zuhairi, a senior cleric, as saying that police in the central state of Selangor had arrested 22 Shias during a gathering to recite Quran and observe Ashura, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him).

Iran raises force to deploy in Arab states, say reports

KONFRONTASI-Iran has formed what it calls the Liberation Army whose units will be deployed in Arab countries, according to reports.

Currently, Iran is involved in multiple conflicts where Shia and Sunni Muslims are locked in a power struggle, notably Syria and Yemen.

Mohammad Ali Al Falaki, who heads the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,  said in an interview published on Friday by Al Mashriq news that Iran is fighting on three fronts: Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

Bahrain jails five Shias, strips them of citizenship

KONFRONTASI-Judicial authorities in Bahrain have sentenced five Shia Muslims to prison and revoked their citizenship on alleged charges of terrorism.

A prosecution statement said on Monday that the criminal court sentenced two of the unnamed defendants to three and ten years in prison respectively over alleged involvement in activities linked to the country’s biggest opposition bloc, al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.

Baghdad car bomb kills at least 13 Shia pilgrims

Over 700 Shias missing after Nigeria army raids: Shia group

KONFRONTASI - A Nigerian Shia group says more than 700 of its members are still unaccounted for a month after the deadly attacks by Nigerian forces against Shia Muslims in the northern city of Zaria.

Kuwait busts 'terror cell' after Shia mosque blast in Kuwait City

KONFRONTASI - Authorities in Kuwait say they have busted a “terror cell” involved in a recent deadly bombing at a Shia mosque in Kuwait City.

Kuwait’s Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Khaled al-Sabah made the announcement in parliament a few days after the June 26 bombing which claimed the lives of nearly 30 people in the capital.

"We are in a state of war. Yes, we have busted this terror cell but there are other cells we are going to strike," the Kuwaiti minister said.

ISIL razes Shia shrines, Sunni mosques in Iraq

KONFRONTASI - ISIL Takfiri terrorists have demolished several mosques and shrines belonging to Shia and Sunni Muslims in the Iraqi province of Salahuddin.

A video footage, which was released on Tuesday, shows ISIL militants bulldozing and blowing up several Sunni and Shia holy sites in Iraq’s Salahuddin province.

Meanwhile, ISIL terrorists also blew up the historical St. George's church in the city of Mosul.

Shiaphobia at warning level in West

KONFRONTASI-The leader of a prominent Shia Muslim community in the UK has warned against the spread of anti-Shia propaganda in the Western countries.

"The rise of anti-Shiism or Shia-phobia, is quite concerning to Shiite (Shia) communities living in the West, and the Internet, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook play a big role in promoting these hate messages," said Yousif al-Khoei on Friday.

Khoei, a director of the Al-Khoei Foundation, also has called for greater police vigilance in the face of what he celled threats against Shia Muslims living in Britain.
