Kerry says no military solution to Syria crisis

KONFRONTASI - US Secretary of State John Kerry has urged the Syrian government and opposition to seize the opportunity presented by the peace talks to achieve a ceasefire in Syria, insisting that there is “no military solution” to the conflict.

"This morning, in light of what is at stake in these talks, I appeal to both sides to make the most of this moment," the top US diplomat said Sunday in an online statement from Washington.

US to pay Iran $1.7bn in debt, interest

KONFRONTASI - US Secretary of State John Kerry says that Washington is slated to repay Iran a $400 million debt, along with an additional $1.3 billion in interest.

Kerry made the announcement on Sunday, adding that the payments date back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, according to the AFP.

The news comes only a day after President Barack Obama signed an executive order, lifting US economic sanctions on Iran.

ISIL, not Russia, poses existential threat to US: Kerry

KONFRONTASI - The US State Department says Secretary of State John Kerry does not think Russia is posing an “existential threat” to the United States, but ISIL and other terrorist groups do.

General Joseph Dunford, the nominee to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has previously described Russia as a threat to the US.

Dunford told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that "My assessment today… is that Russia presents the greatest threat to our national security."

Kerry to Russia: Live up to Minsk agreement

KONFRONTASI - US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned Russia to implement a peace deal to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, saying sanctions are in place to secure peace in the country. 

“I think there was strong agreement among all of the NATO members that this is a critical moment for action by Russia, by the separatists, to live up to the Minsk agreement,” Kerry said in the southern Turkish city of Antalya on Wednesday.

He said there was an "enormous moment of opportunity" to end over a year of fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Kerry urges Congress to give ‘some space’ on Iran nuclear deal

KONFRONTASI - US Secretary of State John Kerry has called on Congress to give his team time and space with regard to Iran’s nuclear deal after Tehran and the world powers reached a framework agreement earlier this month.

"We hope Congress will listen carefully... but also give us some space so we will be able to complete a very difficult task," Kerry told reporters on Monday.

Kerry made the remarks before he and Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and Secretary of Treasury Jack Lew entered a closed-door meeting with the full House of Representatives.

Kerry tells opponents of Iran talks to ‘hold their fire’ until final deal

KONFRONTASI - US Secretary of State John Kerry has called on the Republican opponents of a nuclear understanding between Iran and the P5+1 to “hold their fire” until they see a final agreement later this year.

In an interview with CBS News on Sunday, Kerry said the agreement reached in Switzerland between the P5+1 and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program is just an outline of a tentative accord and the Republicans should wait for the final version.

“In the end, it’s really the final agreement that will determine it,” Kerry said.

Obama to McCain: Leave Kerry alone over Iran

KONFRONTASI - US President Barack Obama has warned hawkish Republicans, including Sen. John McCain, to leave Secretary of State John Kerry alone with regard to nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Iran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – along with officials from the European Union reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.

The two sides will now start drafting a final accord, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is expected to come by the end of June.
