Hong Kong leader warns democracy activists of 'anarchy'

KONFRONTASI-Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying warned pro-democracy protesters on Wednesday they risked bringing "anarchy" to the financial hub, as he sought bolster his support in his first policy address since demonstrations rocked the city last year.

The annual policy blueprint has been a key platform for leaders in the Chinese-controlled city to hand out billions to the less-advantaged in the form of tax breaks, or to signal shifts in economic, property and political policies.

HONG KONG-Two billionaire property developers have gone on trial in Hong Kong in the city's biggest ever corruption case.

Thomas and Raymond Kwok are accused of giving bribes in exchange for information on land sales between 2005 and 2007.

Also on trial are former Hong Kong chief secretary Rafael Hui and senior businessmen Thomas Chan Kui-yuen and Francis Kwan Hung-sang.

All five, arrested in March 2012, have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Kwok brothers head Sun Hung Kai Properties, Asia's most valuable estate agency.

KONFRONTASI-A Hong Kong property tycoon, Thomas Kwok, has been sentenced to five years in jail for corruption.

The former co-chairman of Sun Kung Kai Properties, was fined HK$500,000 ($64,440, £41,327) in a highly publicised graft case.

He was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office, while his younger brother Raymond was cleared of charges.

The firm had said on Friday that Kwok would appeal against the conviction.

Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Protester: 'This Is Not The End'

HONG KONG, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Hong Kong authorities arrested several pro-democracy activists on Monday as they cleared the last of three protest sites, marking the closure of demonstration camps in the city that have blocked streets for more than two months.

About 100 police swept into Causeway Bay, a shopping district popular with mainland Chinese tourists, to remove barricades as protesters scrambled to pack up their belongings from the smallest of the three main sites.

KONFRONTASI-Hong Kong cleared most of the main pro-democracy protest site on Thursday as police hauled activists away, marking an end to more than two months of street demonstrations that have blocked key roads in the Chinese-controlled city.

Many activists chose to leave the Admiralty site, next to government buildings and the Central business area, peacefully, but the overall mood was one of defiance as protesters chanted: "We will be back".

HONG KONG, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Hong Kong authorities started on Thursday clearing the main pro-democracy protest site that has choked roads into the city's most economically and politically important district for more than two months as part of a campaign to demand free elections.

The mainly peaceful protests in the Chinese-controlled city have represented one of the most serious challenges to China's authority since the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations and bloody crackdown in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
