KONFRONTASI- Indonesian President Joko Widodo in a televised address to the nation on Friday night announced that the appointment of graft suspect Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan will be postponed due to the legal complications he is facing.
The president said that he had signed a letter to honorably discharge National Police Chief Gen. Sutarman, and that Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti would take over — for now, the jakarta globe reported.
Budi has been named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) over a number of suspicious financial transactions, leading to calls from the public on Joko to reconsider his nomination of the three-star general as the new chief of National Police.
The president stressed that Budi’s appointment had been “delayed, not canceled.”
“Because of the fact that Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan is facing a legal proces, I believe it is necessary to delay his appointment,” Joko told a press conference at the State Palace. “So it’s delayed, not canceled. That needs to be underlined.”
